Gardening

Community Garden Volunteer

Are you interested in horticulture? Got the green thumb, want to spend some more time outdoors or just interested in finding out how urban communities are protecting their growing spaces. Our weekly gardening sessions offer a dedicated time to work alongside our garden and food coordinator learning how to grow fruit and vegetables, maintaining allotments and light garden construction, as well as season crafts.

Objective

Volunteer Gardeners will assist our Community Food Coordinator to grow fruit and vegetables for use in our free Healthy Eating on a Shoestring cooking classes, monthly Community Meals, families garden learning programme and free distribution to the local community. This is important work in an area experiencing food poverty and malnutrition. Volunteers can also assist in creating habitats for wildlife, growing decorative plants, and occasionally with building garden furniture. The garden at Cranhill Development trust is an important part of our project, our Volunteers ensure we are able to keep this running to a high standard and in return we offer a holistic service based on a relaxed and informal working environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Helping the garden team with everyday practical tasks to keep the garden productive, looking its best, and homely for wildlife, including helping planting, keeping plants healthy, harvesting, watering, furniture and habitat construction, composting, general garden maintenance, and basic garden design.
